Sudoe regions have hundreds of small and medium-size agglomerations operating in rural areas where the management and treatment of wastewaters still follows past needs, when the only priority was to guarantee the quality of water discharges. Additionally, the digital explosion that is experiencing the water field with the deployment of smart technologies in cities is increasing the technology gap between the urban and rural environments. CircRural 4.0 proposes a radical transformation of wastewater treatment in the rural areas, according to a new depuration concept based on the efficient use of the resources. With this approach, wastewater management in rural areas will become energetically self-sufficient and will make it possible the recovery of essential nutrients like phosphorous. For this purpose, current treatment plants will have to implement novel intelligent control and advanced data analysis technologies. (English)
