    Sports is a dynamic, fast-growing economic sector. Nano4Sports aims to encourage and further publicise innovation in sports, exercise and health in the border region. The necessary ingredients are already in place: prominent technological players, innovative companies, excellent (top) athletes and coaches and a large number of people engaged in recreational sports. Thanks to sensor technology, coaches, athletes and amateur sports enthusiasts can improve their sports performances and limit the risks of injury. Nano4Sports will be developing highly-advanced sensors that sports people can easily wear while playing sports. This gives them feedback on a number of issues, such as physical activity, posture, heart rate, muscle tension and skin conductivity. It focuses on running and cycling and will be expanding the living lab platform Run4Sports & Bike4Sports in Flanders, a collaboration between the University of Leuven's Indoor Athletics Hall, the University of Ghent's Sport Science Lab, Topsporthal and the Eddy Merckx Cycle Centre. All kinds of measurements of the sensor technologies being developed will be carried out in these two living labs. In the Netherlands, too, existing SportFieldLabs will be participating in these pilot tests. One major asset is that the work is demand-driven. Athletes will be involved at an early stage in the technology development to accommodate their specific needs and requirements. In addition to measuring the physical activities of running and cycling, there will also be a focus on the constant monitoring of specific parameters, such as heart rate, muscles and skin conductivity before, during and after physical exertion. Earlier IMEC research will be built on, which took the initiative and developed a patch that includes both heart registration and movement sensors to enable long-term measurements. (English)
