The border region between northern Germany and southern Denmark shares its history and traditions, its culture and linguistic affiliation. However, there at business-related challenges which are not adequately solved through national developments. Gartenschau is unknown in Denmark, while in Germany it is a well-known, close-knit concept. Engaging the common strengths, differences and cultures are basis for creating growth, development and lasting value for the whole border region. A joint effort forming one coherent tourism destination. Instead of focusing on a major town, the Landesgartenschau is interpreted into a decentralised, geographical structure with the Flensborg Fjord and the four towns: Flensburg, Glücksburg, Aabenraa and Sonderborg. Furthermore, it is the first time that a Gartenschau concept will be held across the Danish-German border, which requires the development of a shared, regional identity. The border region is not a metropolis, and the potential lies in involving the Gartenschau concept as inspiration and as a basis for a new interpretation. A concept where nature, the maritime element and horticulture supports an active tourism development. The essential point for the border region is to become visible and to be marketed as one joint tourist destination. Already existing and independent projects with their own identity will be linked across the border, in order to achieve enhanced tourism impact and synergies in relation to shared marketing. Pontoons and barges will be transformed into floating gardens which may form the basis for new experiences, function as a green laboratory. Furthermore the existing biking and hiking path network is developed into a strong link connecting Danish and German offerings within culture and experiences in regard to horticulture of all sorts, nature, maritime experiences, localised experiences, art and cultural heritage. These new options for combinations in a shared Danish-German tourist destination characterised by the local population and its interaction with visiting guests will strengthening quality and enhancing the number of activities and experiences offered within the field of sustainable culture and nature tourism. A joint tourist destination with these qualities will appeal to both domestic and international tourist target groups. (English)
