Overview: Sport Uniting Communities (SUC) is a collaboration between the Irish FA, Ulster GAA and Ulster Rugby, using sport to promote meaningful, purposeful and sustained contact between 16,996 individuals from different backgrounds, particularly across the religious divide, resulting in a change in perception and relationships. Proposed Design: The activities reflect our primary research (Provincial cross-border consultation with 139 Clubs and 24 statutory groups), secondary research, and the experience of the Sports Governing Bodies (SGB’s). Focus is placed on joint activities along with complementary individual activities. All are SMART, interlink, contribute to outputs and results, and provide sustainability post funding through volunteer/club networks. The Multi-Sport Partnership (MSP) is unique given the provincial reach across Ulster’s 9 counties (NI, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan). It has capacity and connections through its club structures to deliver activities that will challenge and break down perceived barriers, providing social, cultural and educational opportunities through sport, for people from different backgrounds. Strategic Policy/Context: The project contributes to key policies/strategies within each of the project partners strategic documents (e.g. local/central Government level - T:BUC and PfG 2016-21) as well as European level (e.g. Europe 2020). It does this by engaging with a diverse range of individuals from different backgrounds and divided communities to directly improve relations between Protestants and Catholics, and become more inclusive to BME communities. Additionality/Displacement: This project builds on previous programmes delivered by the MSP but is the first regional strategic programme developed to promote peace and reconciliation. Our consultation forums made it clear that this project will complement and not displace/duplicate any other initiatives. The project would not happen without necessary funding. Need/Demand: Sport is widely recognised as an effective tool in building good relations (e.g. within T:BUC or numerous other local and national research reports. The MSP has conducted a wide ranging needs analysis and our primary research, secondary research and experience from the 3 SGB’s shows that polarisation and segregation between communities is currently still apparent and there is a clear lack of community integration across individual sports. The symbolism of the 3 SGB’s working together is extremely significant. The MSP has delivered a number of previous projects together and the lead partner (IFA), has experience of successful delivery of Peace programmes. Evaluation of these has found that the leadership of the partnership has helped clubs develop as community hubs with better governance, more voluntary engagement and more community impact. (English)
