Het project betreft een nieuwe subsidieregeling, de VIA 2020. Deze subsidieregeling volgt de Versneller Innovatieve Ambities 2019 (VIA 2019) op. Het succes van deze regeling was de aanleiding om vervolg te geven aan deze subsidieregeling. De VIA 2020 is voor mkb in de provincies Drenthe, Fryslân en Groningen en heeft als doel innovatie en valorisatie te stimuleren.Noord Nederland heeft naar verhouding veel mkb-bedrijven. Om de economie in Noord Nederland te stimuleren is het van belang dat mkb-bedrijven innoveren.
