The aim of this knowledge development project is to develop and exchange knowledge with which the participating organisations can use supercritical CO2 (scCO2) as a green process technology for industrial production of sustainable chemicals. It is precisely in the North Netherlands region that the theme of scCO2 fits well with the companies present and the nature of the industry present. With the knowledge already present in the North of the Netherlands, it is the ideal location to start a large-scale project on scCO2. This investigates applications for various market players for scCO2, makes it possible to valorise knowledge, exploits the added value of crossovers in relation to the use of scCO2 in different sectors and technology areas, and creates a (international) knowledge centre for research and application of scCO2. The knowledge development and knowledge exchange within this ERDF 2018 Knowledge Development Project has been deployed from seven basic technological principles of scCO2 which makes it possible to bring the three basic technologies for extrusion (work package 1), extraction/impregnation (work package 2) and chemical modification (work package 3) to a higher level. Work Package 4 is designed in such a way that platform technology can be improved for the three specific basic technologies in which the seven basic principles are applied. This means that topics such as measuring viscosity in scCO2, the way to recycle CO2, the way to inject it into an extruder, the mass transfer and solubility models within work package 4 are shared between the project partners. By taking measurements and modelling new relationships are created and insights that could never have been obtained without this knowledge development project. The joint development and exchange of new industrially applicable scCO2 knowledge can bridge the knowledge gaps between the three basic technologies and develop a cross-sectoral scCO2 platform technology in the TRL line from TRL 3 to TRL 5 which will then lead to different valorisation projects within the three clusters of basic technologies in the TRL line from TRL 5 to TRL 6/7/8. The University of Groningen, supported by Asqa Subsidies, will carry out the management and overall project management for this knowledge development project. For the implementation of this knowledge development project, the University of Groningen will provide an extensive group of PhD candidates who support the various project partners in their innovation projects in work packages WP1 to WP3. Finally, this knowledge development project lays an important foundation for the emergence of future valorisation projects of companies in the North Netherlands that are not yet participating in this knowledge development project and are not yet familiar with the possibilities of scCO2. The University of Groningen, as the administrator of this grant application, sees a great added value in creating an international centre of expertise in the field of scCO2 from which new opportunities and initiatives for business in the Northern Netherlands can be created, developed or further developed. Future valorisation projects will be facilitated by the Competence Centre where the research infrastructure and accumulated expertise/knowledge built up within the knowledge development project is part of the Competence Centre. Within work package 5 of this knowledge development project, the participating companies and knowledge institutions want to make the necessary efforts to encourage other organisations to make more use of the platform technology because they can achieve many sustainability objectives and to realise a new way of thinking for the “2030 industry”. To inspire future generations, courses, workshops and congresses are organised, as well as lesson packages developed for secondary schools, and subsequent education. (English) | |||||||||||||||
