ESTE PROYECTO ESTUDIA, DESDE EL PUNTO DE VISTA TEORICO Y COMPUTACIONAL, LOS FENOMENOS OPTICOS Y DE TRANSPORTE QUE TIENEN LUGAR EN LOS METALES NONCENTROSIMETRICOS QUE PERTENECEN A LA CLASE ¿GIROTROPICA¿, INCLUYENDO LOS GRUPOS POLARES (PIROELECTRICOS, FERROELECTRICOS) Y QUIRALES (ENANTIOMORFICOS). NOS CENTRAREMOS EN DOS TIPOS DE EFECTOS GIROTROPICOS: (I) EL EFECTO MAGNETOELECTRICO CINETICO CONTROLADO POR EL MOMENTO MAGNETICO INTRINSECO EN LA SUPERFICIE DE FERMI, QUE DA ORIGEN A LA ACTIVIDAD OPTICA NATURAL Y A LA MAGNETIZATION INDUCIDA POR LA CORRIENTE. (II) LA RESPUESTA OPTICA NO LINEAL (RECTIFICACION OPTICA Y GENERACION DE SEGUNDAS HARMONICAS) CONTROLADA POR LA CURVATURA DE BERRY EN LA SUPERFICIE DE FERMI. UNA MOTIVACION IMPORTANTE PARA ESTOS ESTUDIOS ES QUE LOS SEMIMETALES DE WEYL, CLASE DE METALES TOPOLOGICOS RECIEN DESCUBIERTA, SUELEN PERTENECER A LAS CLASES DE CRISTALES GIROTROPICOS, AUNQUE SUS PROPRIEDADES OPTICAS Y DE TRANSPORTE SIGUEN POCO ESTUDIADAS. NUESTRO OBJETIVO ES ESCLARECER LOS PROCESOS ELEMENTALES, Y HACER PREDICCIONES CUANTITATIVAS PARA MATERIALES ESPECIFICOS, CON EL FIN DE GUIAR FUTUROS EXPERIMENTOS. TAMBIEN PLANEAMOS INVESTIGAR LA INTERACCION ENTRE GIROTROPIA Y ORDEN MAGNETICO, Y LA EXISTENCIA DE EFECTOS GIROTROPICOS CONFINADOS EN LA SUPERFICIE, EN MATERIALES EN LOS QUE DICHOS EFECTOS NO OCURREN EN EL INTERIOR. OTRO OBJETIVO DEL PROYECTO ES DESAROLLAR METODOS DE PRIMEROS PRINCIPIOS PARA DESCRIBIR LOS EFECTOS MAGNETOELECTRICOS OPTICOS EN MATERIALES AISLANTES, ACTUALMENTE MUY ESTUDIADOS EN LABORATORIOS, Y DESAROLLAR LA TEORIA DE LA RESPUESTA MAGNETOELECTRICA EN AISLANTES TOPOLOGICOS. THIS PROJECT STUDIES, FROM THE THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL POINT OF VIEW, THE OPTIONAL AND TRANSPORT PHENOMENES THAT TAKE PLACE IN THE NONCENTROSIMETRICS METALS BELONGING TO THE CLASS GYROTROPICA, INCLUDING POLAR GROUPS (PYROELECTRICS, FERROELECTRICS) AND CHIRALS (ENANTIOMORFICOS). WE WILL FOCUS ON TWO TYPES OF GIROTROPIC EFFECTS: (I) THE CINEMATIC MAGNETOELECTRICO EFFECT CONTROLLED BY THE INTRINSIC MAGNETIC MOMENT ON THE SURFACE OF FERMI, WHICH GIVES RISE TO NATURAL OPTIC ACTIVITY AND CURRENT-INDUCED MAGNETISATION. (II) THE NONLINEAR OPTIC RESPONSE (OPTIONAL RECTIFICATION AND GENERATION OF SECOND HARMONICAS) CONTROLLED BY BERRY CURVATURE ON THE FERMI SURFACE. AN IMPORTANT MOTIVATION FOR THESE STUDIES IS THAT WEYL’S SEMIMETALS, A CLASS OF NEWLY DISCOVERED TOPOLOGICOS METALS, USUALLY BELONG TO THE CLASSES OF GIROTROPIC CRYSTALS, ALTHOUGH THEIR OPTIC AND TRANSPORT PROPERTIES ARE STILL LITTLE STUDIED. OUR GOAL IS TO CLARIFY THE ELEMENTARY PROCESSES, AND MAKE QUANTITATIVE PREDICTIONS FOR SPECIFIC MATERIALS, IN ORDER TO GUIDE FUTURE EXPERIMENTS. WE ALSO PLAN TO INVESTIGATE THE INTERACTION BETWEEN GIROTROPIA AND MAGNETIC ORDER, AND THE EXISTENCE OF CONFINED GIROTROPIC EFFECTS ON THE SURFACE, IN MATERIALS IN WHICH SUCH EFFECTS DO NOT OCCUR INSIDE. ANOTHER OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP METHODS OF FIRST PRINCIPLES TO DESCRIBE THE OPTIMAL MAGNETOELECTRIC EFFECTS IN INSULATING MATERIALS, CURRENTLY HIGHLY STUDIED IN LABORATORIES, AND TO DEVELOP THE THEORY OF THE MAGNETOELECTRICA RESPONSE IN TOPOLOGICOS INSULATION.
