Kaikki merkittävimmät teollisuusmaat ovat sitoutuneet hillitsemään ilmastonmuutosta rajoittamalla kasvihuonekaasupäästöjään. Tavoitteet fossiilisten energialähteiden käytön vähentämiselle lisäävät biopohjaisten polttoaineiden ja muiden biojalosteiden kysyntää. Suomi on ottanut kansalliseksi tavoitteeksi biotalouden voimakkaan kehittämisen ja tavoitteena on kehittää ja kaupallistaa uusia korkeamman jalostusarvon omaavia biopohjaisia tuotteita ja näiden tuotantoteknologioita. Teollisen mittakaavan uusien biojalostusprosessien teknologiantarjonta on kehittynyt merkittävästi viime vuosina. Useat kansalliset ja globaalit toimijat ovat hakemassa biojalostamoille sijoituspaikkoja. Etelä-Savossa on tehty usean vuoden ajan systemaattista työtä metsäbiomassan jalostusasteen nostamiselle erityisesti energiakäyttöön soveltuvan biohiilen osalta, mutta samalla on tunnistettu muitakin potentiaalisia biomassan jalostusmuotoja, kuten puupohjainen etanoli ja puun kuoresta saatavat jalosteet. Etelä-Savon runsaat metsäbiomassavarat, olemassa oleva logistinen ja energiantuotantoinfrastruktuuri sekä kaupunkikonsernien aktiivinen rooli pilotointi- ja demonstraatioalustojen mahdollistajana ovat kilpailutekijöitä, joiden tehokas hyödyntäminen mahdollistaa teollisten biojalostustoimintojen sijoittumisen maakuntaan. Hanke edistää kaupallisten teollisen kokoluokan biojalostamoinvestointien ja biojalostustoiminnan syntymistä Mikkelin seudulle. Hankkeen tavoitteena on vähintään yhden teollisen mittakaavan, puupohjaista biomassaa hyödyntävän biojalostamoinvestoinnin saaminen maakuntaan vuoteen 2019 mennessä. Tavoitteena on myös kytkeä alueen biojalostamoihin liittyvää T&K-toimintaa ja -toimijoita (kuten MAMK ja LUT) mukaan hankkeisiin, etenkin uusien tuotteiden kehittämiseksi ja kaupallistamiseksi biojalostusprosessien sivutuotevirroista. Hankkeessa hyödynnetään kansainvälisiä biopolttoaine- ja biojalostusalan verkostoja. (Finnish)

All major industrialised countries are committed to mitigating climate change by limiting their greenhouse gas emissions. The targets for reducing the use of fossil energy sources will increase demand for bio-based fuels and other bio-processed products. Finland has set itself a national objective for the intensive development of the bioeconomy and aims to develop and commercialise new bio-based products with higher value added and their production technologies. The technology supply of new industrial-scale biorefining processes has evolved significantly in recent years. Several national and global actors are seeking sites for biorefineries. South Savo has been engaged in systematic work for several years to increase the processing of forest biomass, especially for biocarbon suitable for energy use, but other potential forms of biomass processing, such as wood-based ethanol and wood bark processing, have been identified. South Savo’s abundant forest biomass resources, the existing logistic and energy production infrastructure and the active role of urban groups in enabling piloting and demonstration platforms are competitive factors, the efficient use of which enables industrial biorefining activities to be located in the province. The project promotes the creation of commercial industrial-scale biorefinery investments and biorefining activities in the Mikkeli region. The project aims at mobilising at least one industrial scale biorefinery investment using wood-based biomass in the province by 2019. The aim is also to link T&K activities and operators (such as MAMK and LUT) related to biorefineries in the region to projects, in particular to develop and commercialise new products from bio-refinery by-product streams.
