Today, the logistics sector works largely in an analogous world and operating models are underdeveloped and do not take into account the opportunities offered by digitalisation. In the Government’s decision of principle concerning the strengthening of logistics and the transport sector and the digitalisation of ports, digitalisation states that digitalisation will change the operating models of goods logistics. However, the low degree of digitalisation in Finland has been an obstacle to the development of logistics. The visions of the decision-in-principle for 2022 and 2025 aim to create new operating models for the goods logistics sector, which will enable better information to flow through the transport chains. In addition, MaaS (Mobility as a Service) and the digital transformation aim to meet climate goals in terms of logistics. Kymenlaakso is known for its strong logistics and forest industry, which has the potential to develop in the digital transformation. On the other hand, Kymenlaakso is an area of sudden structural change, which has had a negative impact on the development of the province. As a result, Kymenlaakso has been overshadowed by other provinces also in the field of digitalisation. The project aims for a new 5G innovation and testing platform. A similar research platform focusing on logistics and industry is not available in other Finnish provinces. The platform renews and strengthens the region’s vitality, knowledge base and creates new types of research and development jobs for logistics and industry. The platform supports both Kymenlaakso’s RIS3-startgy, the provincial programme, the TEM transport growth programme and the Government’s decision in principle on logistics. The South East Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk) implements a project that aims to establish a 5G innovation and testing platform based on the 5G network standard in the port environment and to form a cooperation network based on the Triple Helix model. The cooperation network brings together technology manufacturers, end-users and research institutes. A testing and innovation platform based on the 5G network standard will pilot technologies adapted to the needs of logistics and industry; IoT, artificial intelligence (AI), sub-automation, robotisation, analytics and cybersecurity. Operational objectives include improving the efficiency of the logistics and port industries, physical testing of new digital innovations on the platform and making use of pilots and their results in the future. In addition, support services for piloting will be created to ensure cooperation and quality for technology-manufacturing companies. Tests and pilots aim to meet the objectives of the strategies, increase the competitiveness of the sector and create new business opportunities around 5G technology and port logistics. Tänä päivänä logistiikka-ala toimii pitkälti analogisessa maailmassa ja toimintamallit ovat kehittymättömiä, eivätkä ota huomioon digitalisaation tarjoamia mahdollisuuksia. Valtioneuvoston periaatepäätöksessä koskien logistiikan ja kuljetussektorin sekä satamien digitalisaation vahvistamista, digitalisaation todetaan muuttavan tavaralogistiikan toimintamallit. Kuitenkin Suomessa matala digitalisaation aste on ollut este logistiikan kehittymiselle. Periaatepäätöksen visioissa vuosille 2022 ja 2025 tavaralogistiikan sektorille pyritään luomaan uudet toimintamallit, jotka mahdollistavat tiedon paremman liikkumisen läpi kuljetusketjujen. Lisäksi MaaS (Mobility as a Service) ja digitalisaatiokehityksellä pyritään vastaamaan ilmastotavoitteisiin logistiikan osalta.
