Jätteiden kaatopaikkasijoituksen vähentämiselle on globaalisti suuri tarve. Kaatopaikalle sijoittamisen vähentämisen ajavina voimina ovat esimerkiksi vaativat kasvihuonekaasujen vähentämistavoitteet, jätteiden kierrätyksen ja energiahyötykäytön lisäämistavoitteet, strategisten materiaalien maailmanmarkkinahintojen nousu, energian hinnan nousu, rakentamiseen soveltuvan maa-alan niukkuus, fossiilisten ravinteiden (fosfori) niukkuus, vesistöjen rehevöityminen ja muu pilaantuminen sekä myrkyllisten materiaalien terveys- ja ympäristöhaittojen vähentämispyrkimykset. Ajurit ovat erilaisia ja eritasoisia eri puolilla maailmaa mutta useimmat niistä ovat olemassa globaalisti ja niiden vaikutus kasvaa koko ajan.UUTE -tutkimushankkeen tavoitteena on tutkia mahdollisia raaka-aineita ja prosesseja, joita voitaisiin hyödyntää materiaalihyötykäytön parantamisessa erilaisille jäte- ja kierrätysmateriaaleille, joiden alkuperä on kotitalouksista, teollisuudesta sekä rakentamisesta. Hankkeen tutkimuksellisena tavoitteena on luoda edellytyksiä jätteiden käsittely- ja jalostusratkaisujen teollisten prosessien kehittämiselle. Materiaalireseptejä ja prosessiratkaisuja kehitetään tuotteiden kysyntä, raaka-aineiden alueellinen tarjonta, logistiset mahdollisuudet ja erilaiset toimintaympäristön rajoitteet yhtä aikaa huomioon ottaen. The driving forces behind the reduction of landfilling are, for example, demanding greenhouse gas reduction targets, targets for increasing waste recycling and energy recovery, higher world market prices for strategic materials, rising energy prices, scarcity of land suitable for construction, scarcity of fossil nutrients (phosphorus), eutrophication and other pollution of water bodies, and efforts to reduce the health and environmental damage of toxic materials. The aim of the NEW research project is to explore possible raw materials and processes that could be used to improve material recovery for a variety of waste and recycling materials from households, industry and construction. The research objective of the project is to create the conditions for the development of industrial processes in waste treatment and treatment solutions. Material recipes and process solutions are developed taking into account the demand for products, regional supply of raw materials, logistical possibilities and different operating environment constraints at the same time.
