In the absence of road infrastructure, it makes it possible to transport the people and goods necessary for the lives of the inhabitants of the river. The presence of difficult passageways, called “saps” (fast), makes navigation conditions difficult and dangerous, especially in low-water times. Dans un contexte démographique de forte croissance, le transport fluvial joue un rôle essentiel dans le désenclavement, le développement économique et le bien être social des habitants des localités de l'intérieur guyanais. Le fleuve Maroni marque la frontière entre le Suriname et la Guyane française. Actuellement il est la principale voie d'accès (voire la seule dans la plupart des cas) aux diverses communes de l’intérieur, situées sur ses rives. En l’absence d’infrastructures routières il permet d'assurer le transport des personnes et des marchandises nécessaire à la vie des habitants du fleuve. La présence de passages difficiles, appelés des « sauts » (rapides), rend les conditions de navigation difficiles et dangereuses en particulier en période de basses eaux. Le saut de Koumarou Nyan Nyan, sur la commune d’Apatou à proximité du village de Providence, a été retenu pour être aménagé lors de la période d’étiage 2015. (French)
