    Como consecuencia de la fermentación ruminal, los rumiantes emiten a la atmósfera grandes cantidades de metano, un gas de efecto invernadero con un potencial de calentamiento 25 veces superior al dióxido de carbono. Esas emisiones representan un elevado porcentaje de las emisiones de metano de origen antropogénico y se espera un incremento de estas emisiones en los países desarrollados. Para implementar estrategias para la mitigación de las emisiones de metano es necesario obtener medidas precisas de las mismas en condiciones reales. En la actualidad, existen diferentes métodos para cuantificar las emisiones de metano in vivo en los animales rumiantes, entre ellos, las cámaras de respiración y la técnica del SF6. Las cámaras requieren una gran inversión en infraestructura y tienen la desventaja de que los animales no están en condiciones normales de estabulación. El sistema con el gas trazador SF6 conlleva un elevado coste de mano de obra, además de ofrecer resultados altamente variables. Frente a ellos, los modernos sistemas automáticos de medida ofrecen ventajas: necesidades de mano de obra mínimas, periodos de medida prolongados en los animales, medidas fiables y condiciones de manejo que se asemejan a las condiciones reales. Con la presente solicitud se pretende adquirir un sistema automático para la medida de las emisiones de metano en los rumiantes (pequeños rumiantes y vacuno), que sería el primero de estas características en un organismo público de investigación.     As a consequence of ruminal fermentation, ruminants emit large amounts of methane into the atmosphere, a greenhouse gas with a warming potential 25 times higher than carbon dioxide. These emissions represent a high percentage of anthropogenic methane emissions and an increase in these emissions is expected in developed countries. To implement strategies for the mitigation of methane emissions it is necessary to obtain precise measurements of them in real conditions. Currently, there are different methods to quantify methane emissions in vivo in ruminant animals, including breathing chambers and the SF6 technique. The chambers require a large investment in infrastructure and have the disadvantage that the animals are not in normal housing and eating conditions. The system with SF6 tracer gas entails a high labor cost, in addition to offering highly variable results. In front of them, the modern automatic measurement systems offer advantages: minimum labor requirements, long measurement periods in the animals, reliable measurements and management conditions that resemble the real ones. The aim of the present project is to acquire an automatic system for the measurement of methane emissions in ruminants (small ruminants and cattle), which would be the first of these characteristics in a public research organization in Spain.
