According to the World Health Organisation, health is the welfare state and not just the absence of disease. Knowing the determinants of the welfare state of the population is necessary to define public health strategies capable of having an effect on people’s quality of life. This project aims to measure the impact of diet on well-being indicators, which is one of the least studied aspects of all determinants of well-being. In particular, it would be interesting to examine the effect of the Mediterranean diet and specific foods (coffee, sugary drinks, dairy) which have shown to have an effect on the risk of getting sick and it seems plausible that they also have an effect on well-being. To this end, it is proposed to carry out a prospective study of an established cohort of 3000 people over 60 years of age, with a follow-up period of 7 years at the time of the proposed measurements. The diet was measured with a validated dietary history at the beginning of the study and will be remeasured to examine whether dietary changes influence changes in objective social welfare indicators (Lawton and Brody and Katz disability indicators, Mini Cognoscitive Examination) and subjective (General Satisfaction Scale, General Health Questionnaire, Health-Related Quality of Life). This project is relevant because it would help to understand the relationship between diet, health and well-being in the elderly population of Spain, a group in which the presence of disease is practically inevitable and therefore it is especially important to know which factors can improve their well-being levels.
