Objective: Describe and analyse the temporal evolution of the incidence and characteristics of hospitalisations due to acute and chronic diseases, as well as therapeutic procedures among Spanish diabetics from 2003 to the present. Methodology: Cross-sectional descriptive study using the Basic Minimum Data Set. Using ICD-9-MC, the patient with diabetes shall be defined as having a diagnosis of 250.0x; diseases that condition hospitalisations will be defined including: acute complications of diabetes, cardio-circulatory, cerebrovascular, renal and other diseases of relevance in the literature; the following procedures shall be defined: lower extremity amputations, percutaneous coronary intervention, coronary bypass surgery, bariatric surgery, renal transplantation, implantation of hip or knee prosthesis, procedures on gallbladder or cessation. As a result, the incidence of hospital admission, stay, re-entry rate, in-hospital mortality rate and costs will be analysed. Sociodemographic characteristics and comorbidity shall be used as adjustment variables. Patients with and without diabets will be identified, as well as the type of diabets present (type 1 and type 2) and a descriptive analysis of the outcome variables will be performed for each of the diseases and procedures. Subsequently, and for each of the years of study, a bivariate analysis will be performed by crossing the independent variables with the variables referring to hospital admission. Finally, we will evaluate the temporal evolution in the incidence of hospital admission as well as the variables results for each of the diseases and procedures studied. (English)

(Spanish)
