THE PROJECT AIMS TO OBTAIN RESULTS WITH SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT, THUS CONTRIBUTING TO RESPOND TO THE GREAT CHALLENGES OF SOCIETY (MAINLY, BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY, IN THE CHALLENGE OF ECONOMY AND DIGITAL SOCIETY, PROVIDING ICT APPLICATIONS AND SOLUTIONS IN DIVERSE FIELDS SUCH AS TRANSPORT, LOGISTICS, ENVIRONMENTAL INTELLIGENCE, AND EVEN MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS) BASED ON A STATE-OF-THE-ART RESEARCH AIMED AT THE APPLICATION IN THE FIELD OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGIES (ONE OF THE ESSENTIAL ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES, INCLUDED IN THE SPANISH STRATEGY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION). TO DATE, THE RESEARCH GROUP HAS HAD A VERY SIGNIFICANT ACADEMIC IMPACT ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE, HAVING POSITIONED ITSELF AS A REFERENCE GROUP ON THE TOPICS OF THE PROJECT, AND HAS MANAGED TO TRANSFER TECHNOLOGY TO INDUSTRY BASED ON ITS RESEARCH RESULTS, MAINLY BY APPLYING IDEAS BASED ON METAMATERIAL CONCEPTS. HOWEVER, THERE ARE MANY ASPECTS THAT WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE, AS WELL AS NEW CHALLENGES THAT WE WANT TO ADDRESS IN THE PROPOSED PROJECT. THE PROJECT WILL THEREFORE ADDRESS THREE KEY OBJECTIVES: (1) THE DEVELOPMENT AND SYNTHESIS OF ADVANCED COMMUNICATIONS COMPONENTS CAPABLE OF MEETING THE CHALLENGES THAT PRESENT AND FUTURE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS DEMAND, SUCH AS MULTI-BAND/MULTIFUNCTIONAL/RECONFIGURABLE CIRCUITS, BALANCED CIRCUITS, MORE IMMUNE TO INTERFERENCE AND NOISE, AND COMPONENTS (FILTERS) FOR UWB COMMUNICATIONS, AMONG OTHERS, AS WELL AS THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOFTWARE SPECIFIC TO THE AUTOMATED SYNTHESIS OF SUCH COMPONENTS AND OTHER COMPONENTS OF GENERAL PURPOSE (THROUGH SPACE MAPPING ALGORITHMS); (2) THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MICROWAVE AND WIRELESS SENSORS AND RADIO FREQUENCY BAR CODES, BASED ON THE SYMMETRY PROPERTIES OF TRANSMISSION LINES CHARGED WITH ELECTRICALLY SMALL RESONATORS; THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON THE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE OF SENSORS FOR DIELECTRIC CHARACTERISATION OF MATERIALS (OF INTEREST AS BIO-SENSORS FOR MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS); (3) THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW LABELS AND READER ANTENNAS FOR RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION (RFID) SYSTEMS, INCLUDING GLOBAL BAND LABELS AND FOR METAL ENVIRONMENTS IN UHF BANDS, REPRESENTING AN IMPROVEMENT IN READING RANGE AND BANDWIDTH; SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF DEVICES BASED ON METAMATERIALS CAPABLE OF CONFINING THE ELECTRIC FIELD, FOR ITS APPLICATION TO UHF-RFID READERS OF SHORT RANGE, AND ITS APPLICATION FOR COLLECTION POINTS IN COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS WILL BE EXPLORED.
