THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SUCH INTERACTIONS MAY BE CONDITIONED BY MULTIPLE INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER ORGANISMS (POST-DISPERSIVE SEED SPREADERS AND PREDATORS, HERBIVORES, MUTUALISTIC FUNGI AND ANTAGONISTS, COMPETING PLANTS AND PARASITES). OUR SECOND OBJECTIVE IN THIS PROJECT WILL BE TO STUDY SOME OF THE NEGATIVE SIGN INTERACTIONS THAT CAN PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN RECRUITMENT DYNAMICS, SPECIFICALLY THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN PLANTS AND THEIR PATHOGEN FUNGI AND PEST INSECTS. ALTHOUGH THE INCIDENCE OF PATHOGEN FUNGI AND PLANT PEST INSECTS WITH COMMERCIAL INTEREST IS WELL KNOWN, THE ROLE OF THESE PATHOGENS IN THE COEXISTENCE OF PLANT SPECIES IN MEDITERRANEAN ECOSYSTEMS IS UNKNOWN. THIS OBJECTIVE WILL ALSO ALLOW US TO OBTAIN THE NETWORK OF INTERACTIONS BETWEEN PLANTS AND ANTAGONISTS IN MIXED PINE AND QUERCINEA FORESTS. COMBINING THE INFORMATION OF THE REPLACEMENT NETWORK WITH THE PLANT-ANTAGONIST NETWORK WILL ALLOW US TO EXPLORE A HIGHER LEVEL OF NETWORK COMPLEXITY, SOMETHING THAT FEW STUDIES HAVE ACHIEVED TO DATE.
