CAPRINE REPRODUCTIVE SEASONALITY IS A FACTOR THAT AFFECTS THE PROFITABILITY OF LIVESTOCK HOLDINGS, SO IT IS NECESSARY TO CONTROL IT TO TRY TO AVOID IT. REPRODUCTIVE CONTROL IS USUALLY CARRIED OUT THROUGH THE USE OF HORMONAL TREATMENTS, HOWEVER, THE LIVESTOCK SECTOR MUST ADAPT TO A NEW SITUATION IN WHICH THERE IS AN INCREASING SOCIAL PRESSURE ON ANIMAL PROTECTION ISSUES AND A GROWING MARKET THAT DEMANDS PRODUCTS FREE OF EXOGENOUS SUBSTANCES; THAT IS, A CLEANER ANIMAL PRODUCTION (TRYING TO REDUCE OR ELIMINATE THE USE OF HORMONES), GREEN (AVOID OR REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE) AND ETICA (THINKING ABOUT ANIMAL WELFARE) (MARTIN AND KADOKAWA, 2006). THEREFORE, WE MUST PUT IN PLACE METHODS FOR REPRODUCTIVE CONTROL THAT COMPLY WITH THESE PREMISES, AS IS THE CASE WITH THE MALE EFFECT. THE USE OF THE MALE EFFECT ALLOWS CONTROLLING THE TIMING OF CAPRINE REPRODUCTION BY MANAGING THE PRESENCE OF THE MALE AND, THEREFORE, OF THE TIME OF OBTAINING FERTILE COVERINGS IN SPRING. BUT THE MALE, LIKE THE FEMALE, EXPERIENCES AN IMPORTANT REDUCTION IN ITS REPRODUCTIVE ACTIVITY IN THIS PERIOD AND IS THEREFORE NOT PREPARED TO CARRY OUT THE COVERINGS, WHICH REDUCES THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THIS TECHNIQUE OF MANAGEMENT IN LIVESTOCK FARMS. IN THIS SENSE, OUR TEAM HAS SHOWN THAT WHEN SEXUALLY ACTIVE MALES ARE USED BY PREVIOUS APPLICATION OF MELATONIN IMPLANTS THE REPRODUCTIVE RESULTS AFTER A “MALE EFFECT” IMPROVE. BUT MELATONIN EXOGENA IS A HORMONE WHOSE USE IS NOT ALLOWED IN ECOLOGICAL FARMS. HOWEVER, WE HAVE FOUND THAT THROUGH AN ARTIFICIAL PHOTOPERIOD TREATMENT, PRACTICED IN THIS TYPE OF FARM, THE SEXUAL ACTIVITY OF THE MALES CAN BE STIMULATED BY ACHIEVING AN IMPROVEMENT IN THE PRODUCTION OF SEMEN IN SPRING. IN ADDITION, WE HAVE ALSO SHOWN THAT SIGNIFICANT CHANGES OCCUR IN CERTAIN NUTRITIONAL/METABOLIC PARAMETERS (NEFAS, IGF-1) IN THE FEMALE WHEN A MALE EFFECT IS PERFORMED? FOR ALL THIS, THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SEXUAL ACTIVITY OF THE MALE IN CAPRINE WHEN CARRYING OUT A “MALE EFFECT” TRYING TO AVOID THE USE OF HORMONES AND, IN ADDITION, TRY TO SHOW THAT NEUROENDOCRINE AND NUTRITIONAL/METABOLIC MECHANISMS COULD BE INVOLVED IN THIS PROCESS. THIS GENERAL OBJECTIVE IS PART OF THE CHALLENGES OF THE SPANISH STRATEGY OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION, SINCE IT SEEKS SUSTAINABLE LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT. TO THIS END, WE HAVE RAISED DIFFERENT QUESTIONS: _x000D_ 1. Does the EFICACE OF THE “Macho EFFECT” FOR THE CONTROL OF THE CAPRINE REPRODUCTION BETWEEN WHEN THE MACHES have been established their REPRODUCTIVE ACTIVITY?_x000D_ 2. LA ESTACIONALIDAD REPRODUCTIVA CAPRINA ES UN FACTOR QUE AFECTA A LA RENTABILIDAD DE LAS EXPLOTACIONES GANADERAS, POR ELLO ES NECESARIO SU CONTROL PARA TRATAR DE EVITARLA. EL CONTROL REPRODUCTIVO SE REALIZA, HABITUALMENTE, MEDIANTE LA UTILIZACION DE TRATAMIENTOS HORMONALES, SIN EMBARGO, EL SECTOR GANADERO DEBE ADAPTARSE A UNA NUEVA SITUACION EN LA QUE HAY UNA PRESION SOCIAL CADA VEZ MAS IMPORTANTE EN TEMAS DE PROTECCION ANIMAL Y UN MERCADO TAMBIEN CRECIENTE QUE DEMANDA PRODUCTOS LIBRES DE SUSTANCIAS EXOGENAS; ES DECIR, UNA PRODUCCION ANIMAL MAS LIMPIA (INTENTANDO REDUCIR O ELIMINAR EL USO DE HORMONAS), VERDE (EVITAR O REDUCIR EL DAÑO MEDIOAMBIENTAL) Y ETICA (PENSANDO EN EL BIENESTAR ANIMAL) (MARTIN Y KADOKAWA, 2006). POR LO TANTO, HAY QUE PONER EN MARCHA METODOS PARA EL CONTROL REPRODUCTIVO QUE CUMPLAN ESTAS PREMISAS, COMO ES EL CASO DEL ¿EFECTO MACHO¿. LA UTILIZACION DEL ¿EFECTO MACHO¿ PERMITE CONTROLAR EL MOMENTO DE LA REPRODUCCION CAPRINA MEDIANTE EL MANEJO DE LA PRESENCIA DEL MACHO Y, POR LO TANTO, DEL MOMENTO DE OBTENER CUBRICIONES FERTILES EN PRIMAVERA. PERO EL MACHO, AL IGUAL QUE LA HEMBRA, EXPERIMENTA UNA IMPORTANTE REDUCCION DE SU ACTIVIDAD REPRODUCTIVA EN ESTA EPOCA Y EN CONSECUENCIA NO SE ENCUENTRA PREPARADO PARA LLEVAR A CABO LAS CUBRICIONES, LO QUE REDUCE LOS RESULTADOS OBTENIDOS EN LA APLICACION PRACTICA DE ESTA TECNICA DE MANEJO EN LAS EXPLOTACIONES GANADERAS. EN ESTE SENTIDO, NUESTRO EQUIPO HA DEMOSTRADO QUE CUANDO SE UTILIZAN MACHOS SEXUALMENTE ACTIVOS MEDIANTE LA APLICACION PREVIA DE IMPLANTES DE MELATONINA LOS RESULTADOS REPRODUCTIVOS TRAS UN "EFECTO MACHO" MEJORAN. PERO LA MELATONINA EXOGENA ES UNA HORMONA CUYA UTILIZACION NO ESTA PERMITIDA EN EXPLOTACIONES DE TIPO ECOLOGICO. SIN EMBARGO, HEMOS COMPROBADO QUE MEDIANTE UN TRATAMIENTO DE FOTOPERIODO ARTIFICIAL, PRACTICA ADMITIDA EN ESTE TIPO DE EXPLOTACIONES, LA ACTIVIDAD SEXUAL DE LOS MACHOS SE PUEDE ESTIMULAR LOGRANDO UN MEJORA EN LA PRODUCCION DE SEMEN EN PRIMAVERA. ADEMAS, TAMBIEN HEMOS MOSTRADO QUE SE PRODUCEN IMPORTANTES MODIFICIACIONES EN DETERMINADOS PARAMETROS NUTRICIONALES/METABOLICOS (NEFAS, IGF-1) EN LA HEMBRA CUANDO SE REALIZA UN ¿EFECTO MACHO¿. POR TODO ELLO, EL OBJETIVO GENERAL DE ESTE PROYECTO ES CONOCER LA IMPORTANCIA QUE TIENE EN CAPRINO LA ACTIVIDAD SEXUAL DEL MACHO CUANDO SE LLEVA A CABO UN "EFECTO MACHO" INTENTANDO EVITAR LA UTILIZACION DE HORMONAS Y, ADEMAS, INTENTAR PONER DE MANIFIESTO QUE MECANISMOS NEUROENDOCRINOS Y NUTRICIONALES/METABOLICOS PODRIAN ESTAR IMPLICADOS EN ESTE PROCESO. ESTE OBJETIVO GENERAL SE INSCRIBE DENTRO DE LOS RETOS DE LA ESTRATEGIA ESPAÑOLA DE CIENCIA, TECNOLOGIA E INNOVACION, PUESTO QUE BUSCA LA PRODUCCION Y GESTION GANADERA SOSTENIBLE. PARA ELLO, NOS HEMOS PLANTEADO DIFERENTES CUESTIONES: _x000D_ 1. ¿LA EFICACIA DEL "EFECTO MACHO" PARA EL CONTROL DE LA REPRODUCCION CAPRINA MEJORA CUANDO A LOS MACHOS SE LES HA ESTIMULADO SU ACTIVIDAD REPRODUCTIVA?_x000D_ 2. ¿CUAL ES LA IMPORTANCIA DE LA ACTIVIDAD SEXUAL NATURAL DEL MACHO EN LA EFECTIVIDAD AL "EFECTO MACHO"?_x000D_ 3. ¿EL "EFECTO MACHO" ES CAPAZ DE MODIFICAR EL PATRON DEL CICLO ESTRAL DE LAS CABRAS?_x000D_ 4. ¿QUE POSIBLES MECANISMOS NEUROENDOCRINOS Y NUTRICIONALES/METABOLICOS DE LA HEMBRA ESTIMULAN EL EJE GONADOTROPO E INFLUYEN EN LOS RESULTADOS REPRODUCTIVOS DEL "EFECTO MACHO"?_x000D_ LA RESPUESTA A ESTAS PREGUNTAS PERMITIRAN ENTENDER MEJOR EL ¿EFECTO MACHO¿ PARA EL CONTROL DE LA ACTIVIDAD REPRODUCTIVA CAPRINA SIN HORMONAS.
