(Spanish)

The consumption of nuts within a healthy diet is associated with a low incidence of cardiovascular disease, reduce oxidative damage caused by lipids and lipoproteins and help prevent the development of atherosclerosis. Using the apoE-free mouse we have shown a decrease in atherosclerotic injury by providing a diet enriched in a mixture of nuts compared to a palm oil diet in females. This effect appears to be related to a reduction in non-HDL cholesterol, with increased hepatic expression of PON2 and greater protection against oxidation of LDLs. In all nuts many of their antioxidants are located on the skin and 50 % or more of them are lost when the skin is removed, a fact that has rarely been considered in early nut studies. The contribution of the individual components of the walnut in the development of atherosclerosis has not yet been evaluated. This project aims to address the following objectives:1) To advance the investigation of the mechanisms by which the walnut or its skin exert its action on the development of the atherosclerotic lesion. 2) Characterisation of new plasma markers and their clinical application in atherosclerosis. We will use plasma samples from patients who were given a healthy diet supplemented with or without nuts for 12 weeks. (English)
