This proposal is part of the Social Challenge D for Intelligent, Sustainable and Integrated Transport, and more specifically in the context of observation and navigation systems for the improvement of maritime traffic management. It will also have a major impact on Social Challenge B in that it will contribute to spatial planning and integrated management of uses of seas and coastal zones, within the marine research sub-section, as well as in the sub-section on information and communications systems technologies within Challenge H on Security, Protection and Defence. All these challenges have been identified as priorities in the basic order of the ERDF-Innterconnected call 2016.In particular, the POLARYS project focuses on increasing maritime safety, as well as efficiency in the management of navigation and emergencies, through the development of a novel VDES (VHF Data Exchange System) transceiver that allows the exchange of information related to maritime safety between vessels and between vessels and infrastructure. Once developed, the system will be validated in a real scenario. The VDES transceiver will be performed according to the recent M.2092 standard published by the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) in October 2015. Vdes integrates and expands the capabilities of the existing AIS(Automatic Identification System) system, including its satellite version. The transceiver developed in POLARYS will significantly expand the capacity of the AIS platform, both in terms of information rate and coverage, which will have a direct and immediate impact on the limitations observed on that platform. In turn, it will open the door to the development of new applications not viable on it, whether for environmental protection, navigation efficiency, safety, etc., which in turn will have a very significant impact on the maritime communications paradigm in general (English)
