LOS PROCESOS BIOLOGICOS Y BIOGEOQUIMICOS EN LA ZONA INTERMAREAL ESTAN FUERTEMENTE DETERMINADOS POR DOS FACTORES FISICOS: LUZ Y MAREA. CONTRARIAMENTE A LA LUZ, LOS EFECTOS DEL CICLO DE MAREA EN LA DINAMICA DE LA COMUNIDAD INTERMAREAL SE HAN ESTUDIADO POCO. UNO DE LOS OBJETIVOS PRINCIPALES DE ESTE PROYECTO ES AUMENTAR EL CONOCIMIENTO DE LOS EFECTOS DEL CICLO MAREAL SOBRE LA ECOLOGIA MICROBIANA Y LA BIOGEOQUIMICA DE LOS SEDIMENTOS INTERTIDAL. LOGRAREMOS ESTE OBJETIVO MEDIANTE EL ESTUDIO DE: 1) EL METABOLISMO BENTICO, 2) DINAMICAS NUTRIENTES EN EL SEDIMENTO, 3) LOS FLUJOS SEDIMENTO-AGUA Y 4) COMUNIDADES MICROBENTONICAS, DURANTE UN CICLO DE MAREA COMPLETO (COMBINADO PERIODOS DE EMERSION/ INMERSION Y CONDICIONES DE DIA Y NOCHE) EN EXPERIMENTOS DE CAMPO Y EN MICROCOSMOS EN EL LABORATORIO. PARA LOGRAR ESTOS OBJETIVOS EMPLEAREMOS UNA SERIE DE TECNICAS E INSTRUMENTOS NOVEDOSOS: TECNICA DE LOS PARES ISOTOPOS, MP4 MINIPERFILADOR, MICROELECTRODOS, CAMARAS BENTONICAS, PIROSECUENCIACION, DIFRACCION DE RAYOS X, ANALISIS DE ICP-AA, ETC. LA PROPUESTA INCLUYE EL DESARROLLO TECNICO DEL MP4 MINIPROFILER CON LA ADICION DE UNA CAMARA DE VIDEO Y DE UN SISTEMA DE ILUMINACION, AMBOS ACCIONADOS POR CONTROL REMOTO, Y DE UN NOVEDOSO SISTEMA DE COMUNICACION ACUSTICA SUBACUATICA. IN THE BAY OF CADIZ, THE INTERTIDAL ZONE REPRESENTS 59 % OF THE TOTAL AREA AND THEREFORE OF THE PROCESSES THAT OCCUR WITHIN THE SEDIMENT AND ITS INTERACTIONS WITH THE WATER COLUMN ARE PROBABLY DETERMINED THE DYNAMICS OF THE BAHIA. THE BIOLOGICAL AND BIOGEOCHEMICAL PROCESSES IN THE INTERTIDAL ZONE ARE STRONGLY DETERMINED BY TWO PHYSICAL FACTORS: LIGHT AND TIDE. CONTRARY TO LIGHT, THE EFFECTS OF THE TIDAL CYCLE ON THE DYNAMICS OF THE INTERTIDAL COMMUNITY HAVE BEEN LITTLE STUDIED. ONE OF THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF THE EFFECTS OF THE TIDAL CYCLE ON THE MICROBIAL ECOLOGY AND THE BIOGEOCHYMIC OF INTERTIDAL SEDIMENTS. WE WILL ACHIEVE THIS GOAL BY STUDYING: 1) BENTIC METABOLISM, 2) NUTRIENT DYNAMICS IN SEDIMENT, 3) SEDIMENT-WATER FLOWS AND 4) MICROBENTONIC COMMUNITIES, DURING A FULL TIDE CYCLE (COMBINED EMERSION/IMMERSION PERIODS AND DAY AND NIGHT CONDITIONS) IN FIELD EXPERIMENTS AND MICROCOSMS IN THE LABORATORY. TO ACHIEVE THESE OBJECTIVES, WE WILL EMPLOY A NUMBER OF INNOVATIVE TECHNIQUES AND INSTRUMENTS: TECHNOLOGY OF PAIRS ISOTOPES, MP4 MINIPERFILATOR, MICROELECTRODES, BENTONICAL CAMERAS, PYROSECUENCIACION, X-RAY DIFFRACTION, ANALYSIS OF ICP-AA, ETC. THE PROPOSAL INCLUDES THE TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE MP4 MINIPROFILER WITH THE ADDITION OF A VIDEO CAMERA AND AN ILLUMINATION SYSTEM, BOTH OPERATED BY REMOTE CONTROL, AND A NOVEL SYSTEM OF UNDERWATER ACOUSTIC COMMUNICATION. THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THIS AND PREVIOUS PROJECTS WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO A BIOGEOQUIMICO MODEL THAT WILL PROVIDE MORE ACCURATE ESTIMATES OF THE ANNUAL MICROPHYTOBENTONICA PRIMARY PRODUCTION RATES.
