MUSICAL LEARNING AND BILINGUALISM ARE EXCELLENT MODELS FOR STUDYING HOW THE AUDITORY-MOTOR NETWORKS ARE BOTH STRUCTURALLY AND FUNCTIONALLY MODIFIED BY PRACTICE. BOTH PROVIDE NATURALISTIC SYSTEMS TO STRENGTHEN BOTH AUDITORY PROCESSING AND AUDITORY-MOTOR INTERACTIONS. IT IS KNOWN THAT THE REGULATED MUSICAL FORMATION CAN INCREASE THE VOLUME OF THE AUDITORY CORTEX, AS WELL AS THE STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN THE AUDITORY CORTEX AND THE PREMOTOR AREA. THIS PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO INVESTIGATE THREE NEW DIFFERENT QUESTIONS REGARDING THE POSSIBLE INTERACTION BETWEEN MUSICAL LEARNING AND BRAIN PLASTICITY. 1) WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF MUSICAL FORMATION ON LEFT-HANDED PEOPLE? IN PREVIOUS STUDIES THERE HAVE BEEN INCREASES IN THE VOLUME OF AUDITORY CORTEX AND INCREASES IN HEARING-MOTOR CONNECTIVITY IN SKILLED MUSIC, BUT NO PREVIOUS STUDY HAS INVESTIGATED THESE CHANGES IN LEFT-HANDED ONES. THIS DATA WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LANGUAGE AND MUSIC IN THE BRAIN; 2) ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MUSIC AND NON-MUSIC IN THE STRUCTURE OF THE BRAIN AND INNATE FUNCTION OR DUE TO FORMATION? THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM IN CHILDREN WITHOUT PRIOR MUSICAL TRAINING AND VERIFY THE EFFECT OF EDUCATION IN THE OFFICIAL SCHOOL OF MUSIC; AND 3) IS THERE ANY SYNERGY BETWEEN BILINGUALISM AND MUSICAL FORMATION? THE RESULTS OF OUR LABORATORY HAVE SHOWN THAT SPANISH BILINGUALISM/CATALAN INCREASES THE VOLUME OF THE LEFT AUDITORY CORTEX. WE WILL ALSO INVESTIGATE IN THIS PROJECT THE EXISTENCE OF AN INTERACTION BETWEEN MUSICAL FORMATION AND BILINGUALISM. TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS, WE WILL PLAN TWO DIFFERENT MAGNETIC RESONANCE EXPERIMENTS, ONE IN ADULT MUSIC AND THE OTHER IN CHILDREN. (English)

EL APRENDIZAJE MUSICAL Y EL BILINGUISMO SON EXCELENTES MODELOS PARA ESTUDIAR COMO LAS REDES AUDITIVO-MOTORAS SE MODIFICAN TANTO ESTRUCTURAL COMO FUNCIONALMENTE POR LA PRACTICA. AMBOS PROPORCIONAN SISTEMAS NATURALISTAS PARA FORTALECER TANTO EL PROCESAMIENTO AUDITIVO COMO LAS INTERACCIONES AUDITIVO-MOTORAS. SE SABE QUE LA FORMACION MUSICAL REGLADA PUEDE AUMENTAR EL VOLUMEN DE LA CORTEZA AUDITIVA, ASI COMO LA CONECTIVIDAD ESTRUCTURAL Y FUNCIONAL ENTRE LA CORTEZA AUDITIVA Y EL AREA PREMOTORA. EL PRESENTE PROYECTO ESTA DISEÑADO INVESTIGAR TRES NUEVAS PREGUNTAS DIFERENTES EN CUANTO A LA POSIBLE INTERACCION ENTRE EL APRENDIZAJE MUSICAL Y LA PLASTICIDAD DEL CEREBRO. 1) ¿CUAL ES EL EFECTO DE LA FORMACION MUSICAL EN LOS ZURDOS? EN TRABAJOS ANTERIORES SE HA CONSTATADO INCREMENTOS EN EL VOLUMEN DEL CORTEX AUDITIVO E INCREMENTOS EN LA CONECTIVIDAD AUDITIVO-MOTORA EN MUSICOS DIESTROS, PERO NINGUN ESTUDIO PREVIO HA INVESTIGADO ESTOS CAMBIOS EN ZURDOS. ESTOS DATOS DARAN INFORMACION SOBRE LA RELACION ENTRE EL LENGUAJE Y LA MUSICA EN EL CEREBRO; 2) ¿SON LAS DIFERENCIAS ENTRE LOS MUSICOS Y NO MUSICOS EN LA ESTRUCTURA DEL CEREBRO Y LA FUNCION INNATA O DEBIDO A LA FORMACION? ESTE PROYECTO INVESTIGARA ESTE PROBLEMA EN NIÑOS SIN FORMACION MUSICAL PREVIA Y CONSTATARA EL EFECTO DE LA EDUCACION EN ESCUELA OFICIAL DE MUSICA; Y 3) ¿HAY ALGUNA SINERGIA ENTRE EL BILINGUISMO Y LA FORMACION MUSICAL? LOS RESULTADOS DE NUESTRO LABORATORIO HAN DEMOSTRADO QUE EL BILINGUISMO ESPAÑOL / CATALAN AUMENTA EL VOLUMEN DE LA CORTEZA AUDITIVA IZQUIERDA. TAMBIEN INVESTIGAREMOS EN ESTE PROYECTO LA EXISTENCIA DE UNA INTERACCION ENTRE LA FORMACION MUSICAL Y EL BILINGUISMO. PARA RESPONDER A ESTAS PREGUNTAS, VAMOS A PLANIFICAR DOS EXPERIMENTOS DE RESONANCIA MAGNETICA DIFERENTES, UNO EN ADULTOS MUSICOS Y EL OTRO EN LOS NIÑOS. (Spanish)
