HOWEVER, RHYTHMS IN GAMETOGENESIS OR EMBRYOGENESIS, THE PERI-FERTILISATION STAGES MORE SENSITIVE TO THE EPIGENETIC CHANGES CAUSED BY THE ENVIRONMENT, WERE NOT CONTEMPLATED. HOWEVER, THE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL EFFORTS OF THE LAST DECADE HAVE NOT SOLVED THE REPRODUCTIVE PROBLEMS OF THE SOLE PRODUCED IN CAPTIVITY (F1), HAS MANAGED TO INDUCE HORMONALLY THE RELEASE OF GAMETES, BUT NOT THE PRODUCTION OF FERTILISED LAYINGS THAT MAKE SUSTAINABLE CULTIVATION VIABLE, AND ELIMINATING THE DEPENDENCE ON WILD BREEDING OBTAINED IN THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. IN PREVIOUS PROJECTS WE INVESTIGATED THE NEUROENDOCRINE CONTROL OF THE REPRODUCTION OF SOLE, ANALYSING THE ROLE OF THE PINEAL ORGAN, RHYTHMS OF MELATONIN AND LAYING AND NEW NEUROENDOCRINE FACTORS OF INTEREST IN AQUACULTURE (REPROSOLEA AND CRONOSOLEA), THE HYPOTHALAME-HYPOPHYSIS-GONADAL AXIS (SOLER AND REPROSOLE), THE ONTGENY OF THE CIRCADIAN CLOCK AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF LARVAE (CIRCASOLE AND CRONOSOLEA). HOWEVER, RHYTHMS IN GAMETOGENESIS OR EMBRYOGENESIS, THE PERI-FERTILISATION STAGES MORE SENSITIVE TO THE EPIGENETIC CHANGES CAUSED BY THE ENVIRONMENT, WERE NOT CONTEMPLATED. THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF SOLEMBRYO IS TO DEEPEN THE MECHANISMS OF SENSITIVITY TO LIGHT AND TEMPERATURE, WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE EMBRYONAL AND LARVAL PERIOD OF SOLE, AND TO CLARIFY THE ROLE PLAYED BY DAILY CYCLES OF LIGHT AND TEMPERATURE (AND THEIR ALTERATIONS) ON THE FINAL STAGES OF GAMETOGENESIS, EMBRYONIC AND LARVAL DEVELOPMENT, METAMORPHOSIS, SEXUAL DETERMINATION/DIFFERENTIATION AND, ULTIMATELY, REPRODUCTION OF THIS SPECIES. TO THIS END, WE HAVE ARTICULATED IN THE PROPOSAL A SERIES OF SPECIFIC, METHODOLOGICAL AND SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES, WHICH ALLOW TO ENSURE THE STABLE PRODUCTION OF QUALITY LARVAE AND FRY, DEFINING ADEQUATE FERTILISATION AND BREEDING PROTOCOLS THAT DO NOT ALTER THE NORMAL DEVELOPMENT OF EMBRYOS AND LARVAE, OR THE REPRODUCTIVE CAPACITY OF THE SPECIMENS WHEN THEY REACH SEXUAL MATURATION. THE ACTIVITIES PROPOSED IN SOLEMBRYO ARE PART OF THE SPANISH STRATEGY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION (2013-2020) AND, IN PARTICULAR, CHALLENGE 2: “FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY; PRODUCTIVE AND SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITY; SUSTAINABILITY OF NATURAL RESOURCES, MARINE RESEARCH AND MARITIMA”. THE THEME OF THE PROJECT FOCUSES ON THE FIRST DESCRIPTOR OF THIS GREAT CHALLENGE: “THE PRODUCTION AND SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF AGRICULTURE, LIVESTOCK, AQUACULTURE, FOREST RESOURCES AND FISHERIES, THE AGRI-FOOD CHAIN AND ITS TRACEABILITY, THE PROTECTION OF AGRICULTURAL AND FORESTRY CROPS, ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE, THE PRODUCTION AND TRANSFORMATION OF BIOMASS AND MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE”. THE PROJECT ALSO ADDRESSES ASPECTS OF GREAT INTEREST TO UNDERSTAND THE HARMFUL EFFECTS THAT CLIMATIC CHANGE CAN HAVE ON AQUATIC BIOTA AS TEMPERATURE AND ITS DAILY CYCLES PLAY A KEY ROLE IN CONTROLLING THE PROPORTION OF SEXES, AND SEASONAL TEMPERATURE CHANGES ARE CRUCIAL FOR THE CONTROL OF REPRODUCTION IN SOLE. EVIDENCE OF THIS RELEVANCE IS THE EXISTENCE OF EUROPEAN INITIATIVES IN THE HORIZON 2020 ROADMAP WITH PRIORITY THEMES AIMED AT DEVELOPING ECOSISTEMICA-BASED APPROACHES FOR EUROPEAN AQUACULTURE, AND AT CLARIFYING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT LINKED TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING.
