OTRA IMPORTANTE LAGUNA DE CONOCIMIENTO ES QUE, MIENTRAS QUE SE CONOCE LA ESPECIFICIDAD DE NUMEROSAS ESPECIES DE PARASITOS POR SUS HOSPEDADORES, POCO SABEMOS DE LA ESPECIFICIDAD ENTRE PARASITOS Y VECTORES, INCLUSO PARA SISTEMAS PARASITO-HOSPEDADOR-VECTOR PREPONDERANTES. _x000D_ _x000D_ EL PRINCIPAL OBJETIVO DE ESTE PROYECTO ES ESCLARECER LA DEPENDENCIA DE INTERACCIONES PARASITO-HOSPEDADOR LOCALES DE SU CONTEXTO Y LA IMPORTANCIA RELATIVA DE DIFERENTES PROCESOS QUE INFLUYEN EN LA INTENSIDAD DE LA PARASITACION SIGUIENDO UNA APROXIMACION A NIVEL DE COMUNIDAD EN DIVERSOS SISTEMAS DE ESTUDIO Y ESCALAS ESPACIO-TEMPORALES. TAMBIEN PRETENDEMOS ARROJAR LUZ SOBRE ALGUNOS DE LOS MECANISMOS SUBYACENTES A LAS RELACIONES EXISTENTES ENTRE HABITAT Y ENFERMEDAD CONSIDERANDO TANTO LOS HOSPEDADORES Y SUS PARASITOS COMO LOS VECTORES. LA HIPOTESIS GENERAL DEL ESTUDIO ES QUE LAS CONDICIONES AMBIENTALES INFLUYEN SIGNIFICATIVAMENTE, YA SEA DE FORMA DIRECTA O INDIRECTA, EN LA APARICION DE ENFERMEDADES Y EN LAS INTERACCIONES PARASITO-HOSPEDADOR. ES MAS, EL ANALISIS DE LOS PATRONES DE VARIACION DE LA PARASITACION ENTRE ESCALAS PUEDE PROPORCIONAR VALIOSA INFORMACION SOBRE LA IMPORTANCIA RELATIVA DE DIFERENTES PROCESOS IMPLICADOS EN LA DINAMICA DE LAS ENFERMEDADES Y, TAMBIEN, DE LAS POBLACIONES ANIMALES EN DONDE ESTAS SE DESARROLLAN. EL PROYECTO PROPUESTO MEJORARA NUESTRA COMPRENSION DE LOS VINCULOS ENTRE CLIMA, MICROCLIMA, ESTRUCTURA DEL HABITAT, INTERACCIONES ENTRE ESPECIES Y PARASITISMO. ESTA INFORMACION ES IMPRESCINDIBLE PARA REALIZAR PREDICCIONES PRECISAS SOBRE LA PROBABILIDAD DE LA APARICION DE ENFERMEDADES, ESPECIALMENTE EN EL ESCENARIO ACTUAL DE CAMBIO CLIMATICO. WE ALSO INTEND TO SHED LIGHT ON SOME OF THE MECHANISMS UNDERLYING THE EXISTING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN HABITAT AND DISEASE CONSIDERING BOTH HOSTS AND THEIR PARASITES AND VECTORS. THE GENERAL HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY IS THAT ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS SIGNIFICANTLY INFLUENCE, EITHER DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, DISEASE OCCURRENCES AND PARASITIC-HOST INTERACTIONS. THIS APPROACH IS NECESSARY ONCE THE ISOLATED STUDY OF PARASITIC-HOST INTERACTIONS HAS BEEN INSUFFICIENT. MOREOVER, THE ANALYSIS OF THE VARIATION PATTERNS OF PARASITATION BETWEEN SCALES CAN PROVIDE VALUABLE INFORMATION ON THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF DIFFERENT PROCESSES INVOLVED IN THE DYNAMICS OF DISEASES AND, ALSO, OF THE ANIMAL POPULATIONS WHERE THEY DEVELOP. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL IMPROVE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE LINKS BETWEEN CLIMATE, MICROCLIMATE, HABITAT STRUCTURE, INTERSPECIES INTERACTIONS AND PARASITISM. THIS INFORMATION IS ESSENTIAL TO MAKE ACCURATE PREDICTIONS ABOUT THE LIKELIHOOD OF DISEASE OCCURRENCE, ESPECIALLY IN THE CURRENT CLIMATE CHANGE SCENARIO. GIVEN THAT WE WILL JOINTLY ANALYSE THE ECOLOGY OF HEMATOFAGOS DIPTERA AND THEIR HOSTS, THE IMPACT OF THE PROJECT WILL INCREASE SIGNIFICANTLY IF THE ROLE AS VECTOR OF THE FORMER IS CONFIRMED TO BE ABLE TO CLARIFY ITS EFFECTS ON THE EXPANSION OF AVIAN HEMOPARASITES.
