THE REVERSIBILITY OF THIS PROCESS OF CHANGE IN THE STRUCTURE OF THE PLANT COMMUNITY WILL BE AGGRAVATED IF THERE ARE ALSO FOREST FIRES. RECURRENCE OF FIRES AND DROUGHTS WILL AFFECT MEDITERRANEAN ECOSYSTEMS, WHICH GENERALLY RECOVER THEIR STRUCTURE AND COMPOSITION RELATIVELY QUICKLY AFTER FIRE. THE CONSEQUENCES OF THESE CHANGES IN THE PLANT COMMUNITY WILL ALTER THE DISTRIBUTION OF RAINWATER IN THE AEREAN PART OF ECOSYSTEMS, PROBABLY INCREASING RUN-OFF, DECREASING INFILTRATIONS, AND REDUCING WATER RECHARGE. ON THE ONE HAND, THE INFILTRATION (BLUE WATER) COULD BE REDUCED AND THE SURFACE RUNOFF INCREASED (BLUE WATER), AND ON THE OTHER HAND THE INTERCEPTION AND PERSPIRATION (GREEN WATER) WOULD BE REDUCED, BUT IT WOULD SURELY INCREASE DIRECT EVAPORATION FROM THE GROUND (GREEN WATER). AS FOR THE EFFECTS ON WATER RESOURCES STORED IN AQUIFERS, THERE ARE STILL SIGNIFICANT UNCERTAINTIES ABOUT THE CONDITION OF CLIMATIC CHANGE. VARIATIONS IN RAINFALL PATTERNS WILL AFFECT RECHARGE, ALTHOUGH DEPENDING ON THE GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION THIS CONDITION MAY BE POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE AND WITH A GREATER OR LESSER INTENSITY. In addition to this condition in the water enterings into the aquaifers, what if it seems more likely is that the increase of the Potential EVAPOTRANSPIRACTION (ETO) and an increase in the FECUENCE OF FECUENCES OF SECES will result in a greater preoccupation on the aquaifers, and that the EXTRACTIONS will be intensified due to a higher demand, specifically for agriculture._x000D_ THE ALTERACLIM PROJECT PREVENANT TO PROFUND IN THESE POINTS WITH THIS SUB-PROJECTS. SEQUET WILL FOCUS ON ASSESSING THE MAGNITUDE OF CHANGES IN THE FREQUENCY OF HEAVY RAINFALL AND THE LENGTH OF DRY PERIODS IN THE REGION, AND THEIR EFFECTS ON THE PLANT STRUCTURE, ON WATER BALANCES, AND ON THE RECHARGE OF THE AQUIFERS. THE SURVIVE 2 PROJECT WILL STUDY THE EFFECTS OF THESE CHANGES ON THE VULNERABILITY OF THE SPECIES, ON THEIR AGGRAVATION WITH THE RECURRENCE OF FIRES, VERY LIKELY IN THE REGION, AND ON EVALUATING STRATEGIES TO ADAPT TO THESE NEW CONDITIONS. IT IS EXPECTED TO CONFIRM THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE PLANT STRUCTURE AND THE WATER BALANCES, AND THE DEPENDENCE OF BOTH WITH THE CLIMATIC PATTERN IMPOSED BY THE CLIMATIC CHANGE. EL PROYECTO ALTERACLIM ES UNA APROXIMACION MULTIDISCIPLINAR PARA EVALUAR EL EFECTO DEL CAMBIO CLIMATICO SOBRE LA ESTRUCTURA Y FUNCIONALIDAD DE LAS COMUNIDADES, Y EN CONSECUENCIA SOBRE EL BALANCE HIDRICO Y LA RECARGA DE LOS ACUIFEROS. SE ESTUDIARAN LOS EFECTOS CONCRETOS DE LAS SEQUIAS Y LOS INCENDIOS SOBRE LOS CAMBIOS EN LA ESTRUCTURA VEGETAL DE PINARES Y MATORRALES DE CLIMA SEMIARIDO A SECO. ADEMAS, SE PROBARA SU EFECTO SOBRE EL BALANCE DE AGUA SUPERFICIAL Y LA RECARGA DE ACUIFEROS. LAS ACTIVIDADES PROPUESTAS ANALIZARAN LOS CAMBIOS DE LA ESTRUCTURA, COMPOSICION, RENDIMIENTO ECO-FISIOLOGICO Y LA VULNERABILIDAD AL ESTRES AMBIENTAL DE LAS PLANTAS._x000D_ LAS PROYECCIONES DEL IPCC APUNTAN A UN AUMENTO DE LA TEMPERATURA Y UNA DISMINUCION DE LAS PRECIPITACIONES EN EL AREA MEDITERRANEA, Y SE ESTIMA UN AUMENTO DE LOS EPISODIOS DE SEQUIA EXTREMA, QUE PUEDAN AFECTAR A LA SUPERVIVENCIA DE ESPECIES Y LA COMPOSICION DE LAS COMUNIDADES VEGETALES. EN ESTE CONTEXTO, LAS ESPECIES Y COMUNIDADES SE ADAPTARAN A LAS NUEVAS CONDICIONES CLIMATICAS MODIFICANDO SU COMPOSICION Y ESTRUCTURA, O SE EXTINGUIRAN SI NO PUEDEN RESISTIR LOS CAMBIOS SUSTANCIALES DE LAS CONDICIONES CLIMATICAS. LA REVERSIBILIDAD DE ESTE PROCESO DE CAMBIO EN LA ESTRUCTURA DE LA COMUNIDAD VEGETAL, SE VERA AGRAVADA SI CONCURREN ADEMAS INCENDIOS FORESTALES. LA RECURRENCIA DE INCENDIOS Y SEQUIAS AFECTARA A LOS ECOSISTEMAS MEDITERRANEOS, QUE GENERALMENTE RECUPERAN SU ESTRUCTURA Y COMPOSICION CON RELATIVA RAPIDEZ DESPUES DEL FUEGO. LAS CONSECUENCIAS DE ESTOS CAMBIOS EN LA COMUNIDAD VEGETAL ALTERARAN LA DISTRIBUCION DEL AGUA DE LLUVIA EN LA PARTE AEREA DE LOS ECOSISTEMAS, PROBABLEMENTE AUMENTANDO LAS ESCORRENTIAS, DISMINUYENDO LAS INFILTRACIONES, Y REDUCIENDO LA RECARGA DE ACUIFEROS. POR UN LADO SE PODRIA REDUCIR LA INFILTRACION (AGUA AZUL), Y SE AUMENTARA LA ESCORRENTIA SUPERFICIAL (AGUA AZUL), Y POR OTRO SE REDUCIRA LA INTERCEPTACION Y LA TRANSPIRACION (AGUA VERDE), PERO SEGURAMENTE AUMENTARA LA EVAPORACION DIRECTA DESDE EL SUELO (AGUA VERDE). EN CUANTO A LOS EFECTOS SOBRE LOS RECURSOS HIDRICOS DE AGUA ALMACENADA EN LOS ACUIFEROS, TODAVIA EXISTEN IMPORTANTES INCERTIDUMBRES SOBRE LA AFECCION DEL CAMBIO CLIMATICO. LAS VARIACIONES DE LOS PATRONES DE LLUVIA AFECTARAN A LA RECARGA, SI BIEN, SEGUN EL EMPLAZAMIENTO GEOGRAFICO ESTA AFECCION PUEDE SER POSITIVA O NEGATIVA Y CON UNA INTENSIDAD MAYOR O MENOR. ADEMAS DE ESTA AFECCION EN LAS ENTRADAS DE AGUA EN LOS ACUIFEROS, LO QUE SI PARECE MAS PROBABLE ES QUE EL AUMENTO DE LA EVAPOTRANSPIRACION POTENCIAL (ETO) Y UN AUMENTO DE LA FRECUENCIA DE PERIODOS SECOS ORIGINARA UNA MAYOR PRESION SOBRE LOS ACUIFEROS, YA QUE SE INTENSIFICARAN LAS EXTRACCIONES DEBIDO A UNA MAYOR DEMANDA, ESPECIALMENTE PARA LA AGRICULTURA._x000D_ EL PROYECTO ALTERACLIM PRETENDE PROFUNDIZAR EN ESTOS PUNTOS A TRAVES DE DOS SUB-PROYECTOS. SEQUET SE CENTRARA EN EVALUAR LA MAGNITUD DE LOS CAMBIOS EN LA FRECUENCIA DE GRANDES LLUVIAS Y LA LONGITUD DE LOS PERIODOS SECOS EN REGION, Y SUS EFECTOS EN LA ESTRUCTURA VEGETAL, EN LOS BALANCES HIDRICOS, Y EN LA RECARGA DE LOS ACUIFEROS. EL PROYECTO SURVIVE 2 ESTUDIARA LOS EFECTOS DE ESTOS CAMBIOS SOBRE LA VULNERABILIDAD DE LAS ESPECIES, SOBRE SU AGRAVAMIENTO CON LA RECURRENCIA DE INCENDIOS, MUY PROBABLES EN LA REGION, Y EN EVALUAR ESTRATEGIAS DE ADAPTACION A ESTAS NUEVAS CONDICIONES. SE ESPERA CONFIRMAR LA CONEXION ENTRE LA ESTRUCTURA VEGETAL Y LOS BALANCES HIDRICOS, Y LA DEPENDENCIA DE AMBOS CON EL PATRON CLIMATICO IMPUESTO POR EL CAMBIO CLIMATICO. (Spanish)

THE ALTERACLIM PROJECT IS A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO ASSESS THE EFFECT OF CLIMATIC CHANGE ON THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF COMMUNITIES, AND CONSEQUENTLY ON THE WATER BALANCE AND RECHARGE OF THE AQUIFERS. THE SPECIFIC EFFECTS OF DROUGHTS AND FIRES ON CHANGES IN THE PLANT STRUCTURE OF SEMI-ARID TO DRY CLIMATE PINES AND BUSHES WILL BE STUDIED. IN ADDITION, ITS EFFECT ON SURFACE WATER BALANCE AND WATER RECHARGE WILL BE TESTED.
