Many lower limb amputations in patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) can be prevented with effective detection of associated risk factors and early treatment. Classically, these factors include duration of diabetes, male sex, high blood pressure, presence of micro and macrovascular disease, foot ulcers, poor metabolic control, smoking, and history of previous amputations. In Andalusia, rates remain unchanged and even an upward trend is observed. Currently, it is suggested that other variables, so far undervalued, should be considered for their potential involvement in the amputation rate. These include individual and contextual social aspects (educational level, social class, socio-economic deprivation, unemployment, family structure, etc.). This project aims to address quantitatively and qualitatively the clinical and social factors potentially involved in the incidence, trend and distribution of lower limb amputations in the DM population in Andalusia between 2005 and 2013.
