La comarca del Montsià, a pesar de no ser un territorio industrial, ha tenido históricamente un PIB y un porcentaje de ocupación en este sector superior al de la media catalana en actividades como la agroalimentación, la fabricación de muebles o el cartón. Para que este activo industrial y ocupacional, propio y específico de las comarcas del sur de Cataluña, se mantenga e incluso mejore su competitividad del Ay. de Amposta ha proyectado la creación del FabLab de las Tierras del Ebro. Con este equipamiento se ayudará a dicha industria manufacturera a adaptarse al corriente "industria 4.0" que debe ser clave para su competitividad y, por tanto, debe traducirse en un impacto sobre el empleo y la mejora socioeconómica general en el territorio. Otra vertiente que el FabLab ofrece, aunque de manera indirecta, es el de la retención de talento a través de las oportunidades que se generarán en materia de oportunidades laborales y profesionales, sea con proyectos de emprendimiento, o de industrialización , para las personas con especializaciones técnicas, sean estas jóvenes o profesionales con trayectoria en ciclo de formación.
