LA IRRUPCION DE ALGUNAS DE LAS VOCES MAS SUBVERSIVAS EN EL PANORAMA DE LA FICCION IRLANDESA CONTEMPORANEA VIENE REPRESENTADA POR UN NUTRIDO GRUPO DE AUTORES/AS QUE SE HAN VOLCADO EN DENUNCIAR LAS PRACTICAS INSTITUCIONALES DEL SILENCIO EN LA IRLANDA CONTEMPORANEA, DONDE NUMEROSAS FORMAS DE ABUSO, MANTENIDAS EN SECRETO DURANTE LARGO TIEMPO, HAN SACUDIDO A LA OPINION PUBLICA A ESCALA INTERNACIONAL EN LOS ULTIMOS AÑOS. EN UN DISCURSO DIRIGIDO AL PARLAMENTO EN MARZO DE 2017, EL ANTERIOR PRIMER MINISTRO ENDA KENNY, REFIRIENDOSE AL MACABRO HALLAZGO DE UNA FOSA COMUN CON LOS RESTOS DE NIÑOS EN UN ANTIGUO CENTRO DE ACOGIDA, DENUCIO QUE LA SOCIEDAD IRLANDESA HABIA SIDO COMPLICE DE LO QUE DESCRIBIO COMO ¿EL SEPULCRO SOCIAL Y CULTURAL¿ DE IRLANDA. POR OTRA PARTE, MUCHAS DE LAS VICTIMAS Y SUPERVIVIENTES DE DIFERENTES FORMAS DE ABUSO HAN DENUNCIADO REPETIDAMENTE QUE LOS INFORMES OFICIALES MUESTRAN NUMEROSAS ¿OMISIONES E INEXACITUDES¿. COMO LA RECIENTE METAFORA DEL PRIMER MINISTRO INDICA, EL IMAGINARIO COLECTIVO IRLANDES SE ENCUENTRA PROFUNDAMENTE CIMENTADO SOBRE LO QUE PODRIAMOS DENOMINAR ¿INCONVENIENT TRUTHS¿. POR LO TANTO, EL PROYECTO INTRUTHS SE CENTRARA EN INVESTIGAR DE QUE MODO LOS/LAS ESCRITORES/AS IRLANDESES/AS HAN BUSCADO INTERROGAR ESTAS HISTORIAS SILENCIADAS Y VERDADES OCULTAS QUE LOS DISCURSOS OFICIALES/NORMATIVOS HAN SUPRIMIDO PRECISAMENTE POR SU CONDICION ANOMALA. ADEMAS, EL PROYECTO INTRUTHS PRETENDE SACAR A LA LUZ LAS IMPLICACIONES ETICAS DE ESTE TIPO DE FICCION QUE FUNCIONA COMO UNA FORMA DE RESISTENCIA ANTE EL ARRAIGO DE LAS PRACTICAS CULTURALES DEL SILENCIO._x000D_ INTRUTHS MANTIENE QUE LAS DIFERENTES CONFIGURACIONES EN TORNO AL SILENCIO DETERMINAN LA FICCION CONTEMPORANEA IRLANDESA EN LA QUE LAS REFERENCIAS A LAS ¿INCONVENIENT TRUTHS¿ SE CONVIERTEN EN EL TEMA CENTRAL DE LAS NOVELAS. POR ELLO, EL PROYECTO SE PROPONE (1) ANALIZAR, (2) CONCEPTUALIZAR, Y (3) CATEGORIZAR LAS PRACTICAS CULTURALES DEL SILENCIO EN LA FICCION IRLANDESA CONTEMPORANEA CON EL APOYO DE LOS FUNDAMENTOS TEORICOS DE CRITICOS CULTURALES EMBLEMATICOS DE LOS ESTUDIOS IRLANDESES (FERRITER, FOSTER, INGLIS, KEARNEY, KIBERD, LLOYD, MEANEY, PATTEN)._x000D_ NUESTRO PUNTO DE PARTIDA LO CONSTITUYE LA NOCION DE QUE EL SILENCIO SE CONVIERTE SIMULTANEAMENTE EN TEMA Y ESTRATEGIA FORMAL. NUESTRA HIPOTESIS ES QUE ESTOS/AS ESCRITORES/AS HAN ADOPTADO Y DESARROLLADO ESTRATEGIAS DISCURSIVAS EN TORNO A DISTINTAS FORMAS DE SILENCIO QUE, PARADOJICAMENTE, HABLAN DE LAS CONTRADICCIONES SOCIO-CULTURALES DE LA IRLANDA CONTEMPORANEA. ESTAS OBRAS CONTEMPORANEAS FUNCIONAN A MODO DE CRITICA SOCIAL, MEDIANTE CONTRA-DISCURSOS CUIDADOSAMENTE CONSTRUIDOS A TRAVES DE AMBIGUEDADES, IRONIAS Y AMBIVALENCIAS. EL PROYECTO INTRUTHS EXPLORARA LAS CONEXIONES, SIMILITUDES Y DIFERENCIAS ENTRE LAS DISTINTAS MANIFESTACIONES DE LO QUE CONCEBIMOS COMO UNA PRESENCIA INCUESTIONABLE DE PRACTICAS CULTURALES DEL SILENCIO EN LA LITERATURA IRLANDESA CONTEMPORANEA. PARA ELLO, ELABORAREMOS UN ANALISIS EXHAUSTIVO Y CONTEXTUALIZADO DE OBRAS SELECCIONADAS DE ESCRITORES/AS TALES COMO: JOHN BANVILLE, SEBASTIAN BARRY, JOHN BOYNE,CIARAN COLLINS, EVELYN CONLON, EMMA DONOGHUE, PETER CUNNINGHAM, ANNE ENRIGHT, NUALA O¿FAIOLAIN,ANN HAVERTY, EIMEAR MCBRIDE, JOHN MCGAHERN, LIA MILLS, MARY MORRISSY, EOIN MCNAMEE, DEIRDRE MADDEN, PATRICK MCCABE,BELINDA MCKEON, KEITH RIDGEWAY Y COLM TOIBIN. THE GROUNDBREAKING EMERGENCE OF SOME OF THE MOST SUBVERSIVE VOICES IN THE PANORAMA OF CONTEMPORARY IRISH FICTION IS CURRENTLY REPRESENTED BY WRITERS WHO HAVE CONCENTRATED ON DISRUPTING THE CULTURAL PRACTICES OF SILENCE IN CONTEMPORARY IRELAND WHERE MANY FORMS OF ABUSE, KEPT SECRET FOR A LONG TIME, HAVE RECENTLY AROUSED PUBLIC OPINION ON A INTERNATIONAL SCALE. IN A RECENT ADDRESS TO THE PARLIAMENT, IN MARCH 2017, FORMER PRIME MINISTER ENDA KENNY, REFERRING TO THE DISCOVERY OF A MASS GRAVE WITH THE REMAINS OF CHILDREN AT THE SITE OF AN OLD MOTHER AND BABY HOME, DENOUNCED THAT THE IRISH SOCIETY WAS COMPLICIT WITH WHAT HE DESCRIBED AS IRELAND¿S ¿SOCIAL AND CULTURAL SEPULCHRE¿. FOR THEIR PART, MANY OF THE IRISH VICTIMS AND SURVIVORS OF DIFFERENT FORMS OF INSTITUTIONAL ABUSE HAVE COMPLAINED THAT THE OFFICIAL REPORTS REMAIN TO THIS DAY FILLED WITH ¿OMISSIONS AND INACCURACIES¿. AS THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER¿S RECENT METAPHOR INDICATES, THESE ¿INCONVENIENT TRUTHS¿ ARE DEEPLY EMBEDDED IN THE IRISH COLLECTIVE IMAGINARY. THUS, THE PROJECT INTRUTHS FOCUSES ON EXPLORING HOW CONTEMPORARY IRISH WRITERS HAVE TURNED THEIR ATTENTION TO SILENCED STORIES AND UNRECORDED TRUTHS WHICH THE NORMATIVE/INSTITUTIONAL DISCOURSES HAD SUPPRESSED BECAUSE OF THEIR BEING ¿ANOMALIES¿ DIVERGING FROM THE OFFICIAL TRUTH. THE PROJECT AIMS TO FLESH OUT THE ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF THIS FORM OF WRITING AS A PRIVILEGED SITE OF RESISTANCE TO HABITUAL CULTURAL PRACTICES OF SILENCE._x000D_ IN THIS CONTEXT, THE PROJECT INTRUTHS ARGUES THAT CONFIGURATIONS OF SILENCE DOMINATE THE LITERARY IMAGINATION OF CONTEMPORARY IRELAND WHERE REFERENCES TO ¿INCONVENIENT TRUTHS¿ THAT CANNOT BE SPOKEN HAVE BECOME THE ESSENTIAL THEME OF MANY NOVELS. THUS, THIS RESEARCH PROJECT AIMS TO (1) ANALYZE, (2) CONCEPTUALIZE, (3) CATEGORIZE, THE REPRESENTATION OF CULTURAL PRACTICES OF SILENCE IN CONTEMPORARY IRISH FICTION WITH THE USE OF CONCEPTUAL INSTRUMENTS DERIVED FROM THEORETICAL TENETS OF THE INNOVATIVE CRITICAL WORK OF CONTEMPORARY IRISH CULTURAL CRITICS (FERRITER, FOSTER, INGLIS, KEARNEY, KIBERD, LLOYD, MEANEY, PATTEN)._x000D_ OUR HYPOTHESIS IS THAT MANY CONTEMPORARY IRISH WRITERS HAVE ADOPTED AND DEVELOPED DISCURSIVE STRATEGIES OF SILENCE THAT PARADOXICALLY ¿SPEAK¿ IN THEIR FICTIONS. CONTEMPORARY NOVELS TEND TO FUNCTION AS COUNTER-HEGEMONIC NARRATIVES SUBTLY ARTICULATED THROUGH LINGUISTIC GAPS, DISPLACEMENTS, IRONY AND AMBIVALENCE. THE PROJECT INTRUTHS WILL DRAW ON ALL THIS TO EXPLORE THE INTERRELATIONS, SIMILARITIES AND DISSIMILARITIES OF WHAT WE CONCEIVE OF AS THE OVERWHELMING PRESENCE OF CULTURAL PRACTICES OF SILENCE IN THE CONTEMPORARY LITERARY PRODUCTION OF IRISH FICTION WRITERS. THIS HYPOTHESIS WILL BE TESTED BY MEANS OF A CONTEXTUALIZED ANALYSIS OF SPECIFIC NOVELS BY REPRESENTATIVE WRITERS SUCH AS JOHN BANVILLE, SEBASTIAN BARRY, JOHN BOYNE,CIARAN COLLINS, EVELYN CONLON, EMMA DONOGHUE, PETER CUNNINGHAM, ANNE ENRIGHT, NUALA O¿FAIOLAIN, ANN HAVERTY, EIMEAR MCBRIDE, JOHN MCGAHERN, LIA MILLS, MARY MORRISSY, EOIN MCNAMEE, DEIRDRE MADDEN, PATRICK MCCABE,BELINDA MCKEON, KEITH RIDGEWAY, COLM TOIBIN.
