Property / summary

The aim of the project is to study the composition of wild and cultivated forest and marsh berry extracts (genus Vaccinium) using environmentally friendly biologically active substances, non-solvent and extraction methods of CO2 supercritical status, and to carry out an in vitro study of the pharmacological activity of extractive substances in order to obtain biopharmaceuticals and biomedicine and to develop innovative health promotion products. The project will contribute to the implementation of the Latvian Smart Specialisation Strategy, contributing to the development of biopharmaceuticals. Research of the composition of plant products and the offer of new application solutions will promote strengthening of Latvia’s niche in the EU bioeconomy production market; The complete processing of the raw materials used will ensure the production of high added value products with a high export capacity. The scientific value of the results is determined by an in-depth study of secondary metabolites of wild and cultured Vaccinium berry using methods such as GC-MS, UPLC-MS, UPLC-ESI-TOF, preparative fractionation of extractive substances obtained, and biological activity testing to identify fractions of higher activity, but also specific substances if necessary. The novelty of the study will be based on modern scientific knowledge about an important group of plant kingdoms. The project will make an important contribution to the development of eco-innovative technologies in accordance with the generally accepted understanding of eco-innovation, as it will motivate the development of eco-friendly products (organic, eco-) production while strengthening Latvia’s position as eco-producers in the EU and other markets. The project will focus on the development of environmentally friendly technologies, ensuring the extraction of innovative biopharmaceutical products. The following results are expected during the project life cycle: 5 original scientific articles that will be submitted for publication in journals or conference articles included in Web of Science or SCOPUS databases, including 1 original scientific article, which will be submitted for publication in the written collection, whose citation index reaches at least 50 percent of the industry average citation index, a patent-protected product and its method of obtaining, an innovative, health-enhancing product prototype, as well as product usage recommendations. The project is planned to start on February 1, 2017 and be implemented by 31 January 2020 (36 months). The project will be implemented by the University of Latvia in cooperation with a partner – SIA “Silv EXPO” as a non-economic Industrial Research. The total eligible costs of the project are EUR 644456.79, incl. ERDF co-financing of 85 %, – EUR 547788.27. Compliance of the project with the OECD Sectoral Classification of Sciences – 1.5. Land and environmental sciences, 2.9. Environmental biotechnology and 3.1. Basic medical sciences (pharmacology and pharmacy). Keywords: Pharmacological activity of polyphenols, genus Vaccinum, secondary metabolites. (English)

(Latvian)
