The rapid increase in the needs for fast and continuous networking, combined with the equally astonishing expansion of the mass of people benefiting from internet connection, are powerful incentives to focus research effort on the design and implementation of future 5th Generation networks. Following the onslaught of the 4th Generation networks and the awareness of the huge roads it has set for improving human everyday life, increasing productivity and satisfying modern needs, the new requirements set out are pressing for the improvement of existing network infrastructures based on a new design and network architecture that will lead to the 5th Generation Networks. The new network architecture should benefit from new wireless protocols and new frequencies which seem to play a crucial role in achieving future goals. The new networks should also achieve the harmonised operation of the different wireless and wired technologies in a single network. The use of innovative tools to control and manage the single network will be another challenge in this effort. This action will contribute decisively to the design of architecture and the smooth operation of the 5th Generation networks, through the search of the team in the fields of research and the challenges mentioned above, as well as the diffusion of the results of its research to the global research community. Η αλματώδης αύξηση των αναγκών για γρήγορη και συνεχή δικτύωση, σε συνδυασμό με την εξίσου εκπληκτική διεύρυνση της μάζας ανθρώπων που επωφελούνται από την διασύνδεση στο διαδίκτυο, είναι ισχυρά κίνητρα για την εστίαση της ερευνητικής προσπάθειας στον σχεδιασμό και την υλοποίηση των μελλοντικών δικτύων 5ης Γενιάς. Μετά την επέλαση των δικτύων 4ης Γενιάς και την συνειδητοποίηση των τεράστιων δρόμων που χάραξε για την βελτίωση της ανθρώπινης καθημερινότητας, την αύξηση των παραγωγικότητας και την ικανοποίηση των σύγχρονων αναγκών, οι νέες απαιτήσεις που προδιαγράφονται πιέζουν επιτακτικά για την βελτίωση των υπαρχόντων δικτυακών υποδομών με βάση έναν νέο σχεδιασμό και αρχιτεκτονική δικτύων, που θα οδηγήσει στα δίκτυα 5ης Γενιάς. Η νέα αρχιτεκτονική δικτύων θα πρέπει να επωφεληθεί από τα νέα ασύρματα πρωτόκολλα και τις νέες συχνότητες που φαίνεται να παίζουν ένα κρίσιμο ρόλο στην επίτευξη των μελλοντικών στόχων. Επίσης, τα νέα δίκτυα θα πρέπει να επιτύχουν την εναρμονισμένη λειτουργία των διαφορετικών ασύρματων και ενσύρματων τεχνολογιών σε ένα ενιαίο δίκτυο. Η χρήση καινοτόμων εργαλείων για τον έλεγχο και την διαχείριση του ενιαίου δικτύου θα είναι μία ακόμη πρόκληση σε αυτή την προσπάθεια. Η πράξη αυτή θα συντελέσει καθοριστικά στον σχεδιασμό της αρχιτεκτονικής και την επίτευξη της εύρυθμης λειτουργίας των δικτύων 5ης Γενιάς, μέσα από την αναζήτηση της ομάδας στα ερευνητικά πεδία και τις προκλήσεις που προαναφέρθηκαν, αλλά και την διάχυση των αποτελεσμάτων της έρευνας της στην παγκόσμια ερευνητική κοινότητα.
